ANASTAZJA BOMBICH JAKUBOWSKI, JOHANN JAKUBOWSKI, AND JAKOB JAKUBOWSKI FROM 1892/1893 |
The picture above is of my great-grandparents
and their oldest child Jakob. It was taken at Conat's Riverside Gallery in Manistee, Michigan in 1892 or 1893.
The mystery here is trying to figure out why they were in Michigan. They settled in Wilkes-Barre as soon
as they arrived in the U.S. and except for the trip to Michigan about a year after they got here, they were in Wilkes-Barre
for the rest of their lives. There was word from another relative that Johann's mother, Felisa Gesicki Jakubowski, came
over to the U.S. around the time they did in 1891 and that she may have settled in Michigan or Minnesota. That relative
said Anastazja and Johann may have gone to Michigan to find his mother. If that's true, there's no evidence
that they ever found her. Also, the dress Anastazja is wearing in the picture would probably be considered a "mourning
dress" that women wore for a while after someone died. If that is a "mourning dress", did Johann's mother die or did
another relative or friend die? This picture has left a lot of unanswered questions and I'd love to find out more info
about it.
